CREATING DOUGH FOR DOUGH
Chemical Engineering and Marketing Design Challenge
In the third quarter STEAM challenge, students are learning to be Chemical Engineers. They traveled to Canada with VR goggles, where they learn of a fundraising idea that Michelle, a hockey team member with down syndrome, came up with to raise money for her team. Blankner students learn how challenging creating a PROCESS can truly be. Our students learn the importance of Product research to create a product that consumers will want to buy. They then learn about the different properties of play dough and the challenges that mixing those different properties together can actually create. They have to improve the PROCESS of creating play dough, so that the final product is a GOOD QUALITY of play dough that is able to be sold and consumers would want to buy. Blankner students then switch from chemical engineering to marketing. The students work as a marketing team to create a buzz about their PRODUCT (the play dough.) Students will work to name, create advertising, podcasts, jingles and commercials to all help sell their products. Each grade level will have a day that their products are sold to the school. All proceeds go back to our STEAM lab to help fund our next engineering design challenge!
